Red, white, and blue Election Day cupcakes

Following directions from Bakerella, I made these red, white, and blue cupcakes for the first time on the 4th of July.

I couldn’t think of anything more perfect for Election Day tomorrow so I made them again.

Use a white cake recipe and divide it into thirds, tinting 1/3 blue, 1/3 red, and leaving the last 1/3 white. Fill patriotic cupcake liners with layers of each color and bake according to recipe directions. Once cool, pipe white buttercream into a bag (use a large, round tip) and pipe a strip down the middle of each cupcake. Dip the cupcakes into white sanding sugar. Then pipe a strip on one side of the white and dip those in red sanding sugar, following this with a strip and blue sanding sugar. You can use a toothpick to push any loose colors into the right place or just leave them since the cupcakes still look really pretty.
